We care about your cargo
Taking furniture apart makes it easier to move, just be sure to keep all nuts and bolts in a zip-lock bag and tape it to the furniture. Drawers must be taped down and legs must be wrapped in bubble wrap or newspaper. Use furniture pads for ultimate protection.
Use newspaper to wrap your plates, glasses, mugs, and other breakable items. Insert layers of bubble wrap between each plate or bowl that you pack and remember to use small boxes for these items. Place heavier items on the bottom of the box. A good trick is to pack the items you know you will need immediately in your new home in a separate box that is clearly labeled: this will avoid you having to eat take out for two weeks.
When moving large appliances, always check your owner's manual for special instructions. Clean the inside and outside of appliances before moving. Most importantly, remember to secure any parts that could come loose (such as cords, burners, etc.) during the move with tape. Finally, wrap large appliances with furniture pads to really protect them.
Wardrobe boxes are your best option because they allow you to transfer your clothes and hangers directly from your closet to the box. Empty your drawers and pack contents in suitcases or boxes.
If possible, pack stereos, TVs, computers and other electronics in the boxes you bought them in. If that is not possible, carefully wrap these items in plastic bags, bubble wrap and pack them in heavy duty boxes.
Trick: tape an X with masking tape across mirrors and glass. Wrap these items in bubble wrap and be sure to pack them in a box labeled FRAGILE.
Carefully wrap each piece in bubble wrap and pack them in a large box lined in crumpled newspaper. Make sure to add extra newspaper between and on top of items and write FRAGILE on the top of the box in marker.
The golden rule is: pack your books in small boxes, since they get heavy so quickly. If you have extra space in the box, use paperbacks to fill it up.
